Local vs. Regional Scoring

Suitability scores are by default set to "Regional" which means the scores are relative to the entire watershed (i.e., CBLA or LPRW). With regional scores, you may not see areas with very high or very low scores for suitability in your area of interest. If you would prefer to see the scores relative to your area of interest (e.g., a single town, or multi-town area) then select the "Local" button and the suitability scores will be recalculated. In this case, your area of interest should include areas of the highest and lowest possible suitability scores. Note that in some areas there may not be a lot of difference between Regional and Local suitability scoring.

Conflict Layers

These layers show areas where some land uses may be in conflict. Click the information button for each specific layer for details.

Opportunity Layers

These layers identify areas where there may be potential opportunities, or compatibilities, between two land uses. For details about a particular opportunity layer use the information button for that layer.

For example, forest management is often compatible with conservation values, such as under a working forest conservation easement. This protects land from development, but allows forestry activities.

Scenario Layers

For this project, we constructed five scenarios of land use change between 2006 and 2036. The Baseline scenario shows us what things look like if current trends (1996-2006) in development and conservation continue. Around this baseline, we have constructed four other scenarios that vary according to population growth and an emphasis on environmental or economic choices:

Baseline     current trends continue
A1                  lower population growth/ more economic emphasis
A2                  lower population growth/ more environmental emphasis
B1                  higher population growth/ more economic emphasis
B2                  higher population growth/ more environmental emphasis

Suitability Layers

These layers show the suitability of an area for different land uses. Suitability is based on factors and weights identified by local stakeholders knowledgeable about each land use and modeled using Bayesian belief networks. Suitability was scored between 0 (least suitable) and 1 (most suitable) and then rescaled to percentile. For more information on the development of the suitability models and Bayesian belief networks see our Modeling Approach.

Suitabilty scores are shown individually for each land use (i.e., Forestry, Conservation, Agriculture, and Development).

Scores are by default calibrated for each watershed. Clicking the "Local" scoring button will recalibrate the suitability scores for your area of interest (AOI; e.g., town, or multi-town area).

Click on the blue outlined towns / townships to select and unselect them. Selected areas will highlight in red and will be used to definte a custom Area of Interest (AOI).

Welcome to the Maine Futures Community Mapper.

Using this tool, you can view the results of land use modeling work conducted jointly by University of Maine scientists and expert stakeholders from Maine.

The maps presented here are models and are intended to support land use planning by identifying which parts of the landscape are potentially better suited for certain land uses and which locations are more likely to experience future land use conflicts. Please note that the maps do not show actual current land uses and in no way imply any landowner objectives or intent.

We encourage you to contact us using the Feedback page if you have any questions or concerns about the maps and data you see presented here.

This will forget all selected areas of interest and layer selections.

Unavailable Area

Unavailable land refers to areas that have no potential of converting to a new land use because of legal or practical considerations. All waterbodies are identified as unavailable, along with areas that are already conserved or developed.
